44 games into our 45 game season the president of Norweigan Ice Hockey was in Sarpsborg to hand out the gold medals to us. First we had to play a game.
After a good celebration last Thursday we were back to work on Friday, mainly to sweat out the toxins from the night before but never-the-less we were on the ice. Sunday we played Valerenga in Oslo in what was supposed to decide the league but instead it gave our 1500 traveling supporters a chance to glot. If Valerenga is the Yankees of Norweigan hockey, we are the Detroit Tigers. You can imagine how they excited they were to cheer in their rink. Our fans loved wearing their home made gold medals and signing 'Simply the Best' (they love Tina Turner here). At the start Valerenga gave us flowers for winning the league. During the first, Blake Evans (Valerenga forward) came to me laughing saying enjoy the flowers:) The game was ok, for me personally it was one of my best games all though we ended up losing in overtime 3-2. For player of the game, I got a gift certificate for a car wash...must be the bottom of the barrell this time of year:)
We practiced hard during the week, all though in practice we lost 2 of our top 6 defensmen. Both with knee injuries. Hopefully they won't be out too long.
Thursday was a highly anticapted evening in 'Hockeytown' People were lined up around the corner a couple hours before the ticket window opened on Wednesday.
Before the game, the boys were relaxed, enjoying the fact that win or lose we would leave with the trophy today. The relaxed attitude worked and we came out of the first with a 3-0 lead. The 2nd ended 5-0. In the third, they scored on a break-a-way to end my shut-out but the game ended with us up 6-1. We lined up on the blue line and there was a ceremony. They handed us gold medals. And then presented the trophy. It was so much fun to celebrate again. We carried the cup around to Queen 'We are the Champions' This picture is why I play hockey! That is over now though... Our last game is Sunday, I am not playing. Wednesday playoffs start.
